Knocked Out Tooth: Beat The Clock

Whether they know it or not, someone whose tooth is knocked out is in a race against time. If they receive proper treatment within an hour, like what we can provide at OnCall Dental in Fresno, there is a good chance the tooth can be saved.

More than five million people have one or more teeth knocked out every single year. In dental emergency terms, it’s about as serious as it gets. It can be frightening, too, but if it happens it’s important to try to  remain calm and take proper action.

Prompt Treatment!

When a tooth is knocked out, all its blood vessels and connecting tissue are damaged beyond repair. That’s the bad news. The good news is that with prompt treatment the tooth can be successfully replanted, and the bone will reattach to the root. The tooth will eventually need a root canal, since the nerves can’t be repaired.

But that’s getting ahead of things. To reiterate: if it happens, get treatment as soon as possible. Recover the knocked out tooth, but be sure to hanlde it very carefully. Do not touch the root. It’s okay to rinse it off if there is dirt on it, but do not wipe it off: not with a shirt, a clean tissue, a soft cloth, or anything else. You might further damage it.

Keep it moist. Ideally you can place it in milk, but you may not have any handy. It’s okay to just place it between your cheek and gum.

At OnCall Dental in Fresno and Hanford we have treated many knocked out teeth, and other dental emergencies. We can also do root canals. In an emergency no appointment is needed. Walk-ins are always welcome!

What To Do When A Tooth Is Knocked Out

A knocked-out tooth is one of the most serious dental emergencies there is. When it happens, it literally becomes a race against time, but if you keep cool and act quickly, the tooth can be saved at OnCall Dental in Fresno and Hanford.

First, a clairification: a knocked out tooth really is that: a tooth that is knocked out of your head. It is not to be confused with a chipped or broken tooth. Those may be inconvenient, and may also require the attention of a specialist. But they are not as urgent as a knocked out tooth.

What You Should Do

Above all else, remember that time is of the essence. If it’s treated within an hour, the chances are good it can be saved.

Here is what you should do:

  • Find the tooth. Do not touch the root; pick it up by the crown (the part you bite or chew with).
  • Rinse the tooth off if it’s dirty, but do not use soap. If no water is handy, it’s okay to click it clean.
  • Try to position the tooth back where it was knocked from. Place a  wadded handkerchief or paper towel over it and gently bite down to keep it in place.
  • If you cannot get it back in place, put the tooth in milk. If no milk is handy you can just put it under your tongue.
  • Head straight to our office. Call ahead if you can!

All of the above applies only to adult teeth. If a child has a baby tooth knocked out, do not try to reinsert it. The attention of a dentist is still essential.

When treated promptly the chances are good that the tooth can be re-implanted, and will grow back into the gums.

Knocked Out Teeth: As Serious As It Gets

A knocked out tooth is one of the most serious dental emergencies there is. If it happens to you, make sure you get to OnCall Dental as soon as possible. We have offices in Fresno and Hanford.

We cannot stress that enough: time is of the essence. If you can recover the tooth and are treated within an hour, the chances of saving it are good.

A few things to remember before you’re treated: never pick the tooth up by the root; pick it up only by the crown. Keep it moist. If it’s dirty it’s okay to gently rinse it off, but don’t use any kind of soap and don’t wipe it clean. Keep it as moist as possible. If you’re able to fit it back into its socket, do so. Don’t force it, though.

Next best option? Hold it in your mouth next to your cheek. It’s really important to keep it moist. Saliva is best for this. Beyond rinsing it, don’t use tap water.

One More Thing

When a tooth is knocked out of your jaw, the nerves and blood vessels become irreparably damaged. You’re going to need a root canal. If you are treated right away though, the tooth can reattach to the bone. Once it has healed you’ll be able to use it.

At OnCall Dental we have a lot of experience with knocked out teeth, and can also perform root canals. Remember that in an emergency you do not need appointment. We have offices in Fresno and Hanford, where walk-ins are always welcome!

Another important thing to remember is that when we say a tooth knocked out, we mean a tooth knocked out. A chipped or cracked tooth is an emergency, but not nearly as urgent as a knocked out tooth.

If you have a knocked out tooth, this is what to do:

  • Find the tooth.
  • Never touch the root. Pick up the tooth by the crown, which is the part you chew with.
  • Clean it. Lick it if you have to. You can also gently rinse it, but don’t use soap and don’t scrub!
  • Keep it moist. If you can place it back in the socket, do so. If not, place it under your tongue or in a container of milk. Wrapping it in tissue and spitting on it works, too.

Once you get here we will do everything possible to save the tooth. It bears repeating that the sooner you get here, the better.

At OnCall Dental in Fresno we specialize in emergency dentistry.  In emergency cases you do not need an appointment; walk-ins are always welcome.

Immediate Attention: Knocked Out Teeth

A knocked-out tooth is one of the most serious dental emergencies there is, requiring immediate attention. If it happens to you or to someone you know, remember us at OnCall Dental in Fresno.

Something we cannot stress enough: you’re in a race against the clock. If a knocked out tooth is treated within an hour, there is a very good chance the tooth can be saved.

In the meantime, here are some things you can do before getting to our office:

  • Find the tooth.
  • Do not touch the root; pick it up by the crown (the chewing part).
  • Clean it. You can rinse it off in water, or lick it if need be.
  • Put it back in place. This only applies to adult teeth. Baby teeth are not re-inserted; it could damage the adult tooth beneath it.
  • Put a handerchief over it and bite down to keep it in place
  • If you cannot get it back in place, put the tooth in milk, or under your tongue.

Once you’re here, we will numb the area. If you were able to get it in the socket we’ll make sure it is properly positioned. Once we’ve  taken x-rays and are satisfied the positioning is good, we’ll splint it in place so it can heal. This takes about two weeks.

If you were unable to find the knocked-out tooth, your options include getting a dental implant to replace it.

People get a tooth knocked out millions of times every year. It is among the most serious dental emergencies there is, but we’ve had a lot of experience and you’ll be in good hands. You can call ahead on your way in, but you don’t need an appointment and walk-ins are always welcome. At OnCall Dental in Fresno emergency dental care is our specialty.
